Before I introduce my class, there’s something I’d like to address. Without a doubt, AI has entered our lives, and more than likely, it’s here to stay. Our education system, workplaces, higher offices, and our creative spaces are all rapidly implementing and funneling money into AI programs & assistants faster than you can ever imagine. If your child is interested in fine art, illustration, or painting, you may, understandably, have growing concerns about whether to encourage them to pursue these disciplines.
“AI programs can generate images instantaneously, so what’s the point?”
Believe me, as a professional creative myself, that’s a question I have even asked myself in times of disillusionment. AI integration has been a point of contention for many creatives, and in our spaces, you can imagine the debates that go down. It has now even touched my personal life; I’ve had fellow creatives and friends lose their positions to it being introduced.
It’s hard for me to give you any sort of clear answer, but this I can reassure you of: real-world enrichment is always going to be beneficial for your child’s development.
Drawing, painting, or any form of craftsmanship helps any child develop key skills that are crucial to discipline, confidence, and patience. That’s something that is always needed to be experienced. No virtue can be taught without building a memory of it; that’s something AI cannot replicate. And if you're familiar with AI image generation, then you know it can only build on and regurgitate what it is fed by programmers—your child’s imagination has no such bounds.
In my class, your child will learn foundational art skills including sketching, color theory, and composition. Other subjects that will be taught and your child might be interested in are visual storytelling, character design, portraiture, art for print materials, and more!
I tailor my classes to your child’s interests and strongly encourage them to share their favorite topics or media they’d like to use as inspiration. To quote one of my favorite artists, Jamie Hewlett: “If you're having fun... the results are always going to be exciting.”
I integrate digital and analogue methods, as I believe combining both materials will be the most efficient in the development of your child’s skills. Tactility is needed in understanding how painting and sketching techniques are utilized. I will teach using Procreate on iPad, and yes, I am even comfortable with AI being used, as long as it’s applied to the assignment in a way that enhances or tells a story.
Students will explore Procreate's essential tools while developing the aforementioned foundational art skills.
No previous digital illustration experience is required. Students will need an iPad with Procreate installed and a compatible stylus.
Lessons are taught one-on-one, allowing students to learn at their own pace, ask questions, and receive personalized feedback.
To sign off, I’d like to leave you with a quote by John Steinbeck:
“(…)And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual. This is what I am and what I am about. I can understand why a system built on a pattern must try to destroy the free mind, for that is one thing which can by inspection destroy such a system. Surely I can understand this, and I hate it and I will fight against it to preserve the one thing that separates us from the uncreative beasts. If the glory can be killed, we are lost.”
